Session 1 - Risk and return from the bottom up

Investing involves taking risks—but not blindly. In financial markets, prices move daily, and higher prices both increase risk and raise the bar for further returns. In the real world, some risks are costly to protect against, and some offer little compensation for sticking your neck out. But others are underappreciated, providing opportunities to generate attractive returns and mitigate risk at the same time. As we look at the world, we see a few risks that offer both pitfalls and potential returns for investors: the energy transition, deglobalisation, chip scarcity, and ongoing government deficits. Against a backdrop of high stockmarket valuations and high apparent faith in central banks, these risks point to a cautious outlook for broad markets, particularly if inflation proves sticky. But for a bottom-up investor, these same risks offer attractive pockets of opportunity.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand how the semiconductor ecosystem works and why energy is an important consideration for chip manufacturers
  • Explain how the energy system works and which companies are likely to benefit from the energy transition
  • What impact government deficits have on opportunities within stock and bond markets
  • Understand how inflation affects multi-asset portfolios and inflation-resilient assets

Ben Hammond

Managing Director of Insight and Consultancy, the lang cat

Ben joined the lang cat as Managing director of insight and consulting in September 2023, despite owning only a dog. Prior to hopping into the basket, he worked as an industry consultant for almost a decade and has been involved in financial services for more than two of them. His passion (if that’s the right word) has been platforms and technology since his time at M&G Wealth, née Ascentric, and Cofunds, where he worked hard to develop new and innovative products and solutions. Ben is a regular contributor to the press, judges a few different awards (and can often be found at the associated ceremonies) and is always up for a coffee and a chat; however, his music choices are sometimes frowned upon and so he often finds himself banned from accessing the office Sonos.

Session 2 - The Art of Multi Manager and Multi-Asset allocation - Bracknell, East Sussex, Blackburn, Loughborough, Belfast & Aberdeen

An increasing number of Advisers have started using Multi-Asset products over the past five years. This makes sense, given time constraints and the challenging nature of identifying and monitoring single strategy funds against an ever-changing market backdrop. However, using a Multi-Asset approach does not mean that the investment journey is completely subcontracted to a fund manager: Advisors need to be aware of what aspects to look out for and how to reduce risks to their business and Clients in achieving their goals.

Learning objectives:

  • How to approach panel allocations and managers
  • The importance of investing styles
  • What kinds of assets feature in a Multi-Asset portfolio?
  • Unintended consequences
  • Monitoring and reviewing
