Working Lunch Orbis Investments November 2025

Session 1 - The Great Reallocation: Rebalancing Maslow’s Pyramid

Most people know Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: the idea that fulfilment of aspirational wants comes only after foundational needs like food, shelter, and security are met. The same principle applies to countries. After years of prioritising higher order wants, many developed nations are now being forced to shore up the base, as the world shifts from global cooperation to national self-reliance. This reversal may be painful, but it also presents opportunities for investors willing to focus on needs rather than wants.

Learning objectives:

  • Explore how national priorities are shifting from aspirational wants to foundational needs
  • Examine how past capital abundance in some areas contributed to underinvestment in others
  • Understand how market dislocations can create opportunities for investors

Session 2 - Beyond the Noise: From Prediction to Preparation (Southampton & Bristol)

In a world overflowing with political noise, economic forecasts, and investment ideology, QuantQual invites advisers to step back and refocus on what truly matters: client outcomes. This two-part thought piece challenges the folly of market timing and explores how preparation — not prediction — underpins lasting investment success. The first talk examines how disciplined, well-researched diversification can help clients achieve stability and confidence through uncertainty. The follow-up session brings those ideas into the real world of advice, addressing the polarisation of passive versus active approaches, the difference between cost and value, and the growing importance of independent research and outsourcing to trusted experts. Together, they offer a timely reminder that the best portfolios — and the best advisers — are built for resilience, not reaction.

Speaker:

Matthew Dewsnap,  Investment Director,  QuantQual

Matthew joined QuantQual in 2022 as a Partner and Lead Analyst, where he leads the development of our quantitative screening models and oversees the final stage of our qualitative assessments.
